# Akai MPD218 vs Novation Launchpad X

Both are picks from our guide: Best Pad Controllers (https://mid1.com/guides/pad-controllers/best-pad-controllers).

## Specs head to head

| Spec | Akai MPD218 | Novation Launchpad X |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pads | 16 MPC pads (48 across 3 banks) | 64 RGB, velocity and pressure sensitive |
| Connectivity | USB | USB-C |

## Akai MPD218

Our rating: 7.9 out of 10.

Best for: Producers who want big MPC-style pads for finger drumming and sampling without spending much.

The MPD218 is Akai Professional's entry MIDI pad controller, and it's the one r/edmproduction's "Best Pad based Midi controller" thread called flat out "the obvious choice," picking up more votes than every other suggestion combined.

Sixteen velocity- and pressure-sensitive MPC pads sit across three switchable banks, which works out to 48 assignable triggers for drums, one-shots and samples. Eighteen assignable knobs, also spread across the three banks, handle DAW parameters, plugin effects and instrument controls. It's USB-powered, so there's no separate power brick, and Akai bundles Ableton Live Lite plus its own MPC Beats software in the box.

The tradeoff shows up in the same thread that recommended it: a competing comment said "I'm not completely happy with the MPD," and the complaint is usually pad feel, since the pads are smaller and stiffer than what you get on a pricier controller. There's no display, no 5-pin MIDI out, and the build is mostly plastic.

## Novation Launchpad X

Our rating: 8.6 out of 10.

Best for: Ableton Live or Logic Pro users who want to launch clips and finger-drum on the same grid.

The Launchpad X is Novation's 64-pad RGB grid controller, the clip-launching answer to the MPD218's MPC-style pads. The same r/edmproduction thread that called the MPD218 "the obvious choice" also gave votes to the pricier Launchpad Pro MK3, and the X carries the same core grid at a lower price.

Sixty-four velocity- and pressure-sensitive RGB pads mirror your Ableton Live or Logic Pro session in color, matching clips and scenes on screen. Dynamic note and scale modes let you play in-key basslines and chords, and the grid switches to show a drum rack automatically when it detects finger drumming. Four custom modes, set through Novation Components, remap the pads to almost anything else over USB-C.

The pads are the tradeoff: these are grid pads built for visual clip launching first, smaller than the MPD218's dedicated MPC pads, so pure finger drumming feels less natural. The deepest features are tied to Ableton Live and Logic Pro specifically, other DAWs get plain MIDI. There's no built-in audio interface or standalone sampling.
